Acne Rosacea

Filed under: Skin Care — Health Information @ 3:10 pm

What is acne rosacea? Well it is not acne. The symptoms of acne and acne rosacea overlap, but they are distinct skin conditions… Acne rosacea affects the facial area and is most common in fair skinned women between the ages of 30 and 60. When men are affected by this skin disorder their symptoms are often particularly severe. Acne rosacea cannot be cured but the disease can be treated and controlled with the help of a dermatologist.

The early stages of acne rosacea are characterized by frequent reddening of the facial area. It is suspected that individuals who blush frequently are more susceptible to developing acne rosacea. If you have a history of frequent blushing, it may be difficult to distinguish between a normal blush and the beginnings of this skin disorder, since the redness of acne rosacea is intermittent in the early stages of the disease. If your blushing skin burns when you apply lotions or your face is swollen, you may be experiencing the early symptoms of acne rosacea. If you experience these symptoms and do not have a history of frequent blushing, you may need to seek acne rosacea treatment.

As the disease progresses the face become ruddier and is discolored more frequently. Small red solid bumps may begin to appear on the skin of the face. Visible blood vessels and pimples will also appear. Blackheads, a normal symptom of acne, do not appear with the pimples of an acne rosacea sufferer. In severe cases of this disease the skin of the face may thicken and the nose may become bulbous.

The eyes of fifty percent of acne rosacea suffers are affected by this disease. The eyelids become inflamed, and the eyes are red and irritated. Tearing and frequent sty’s are common when acne rosacea affect the eye area. In severe cases loss of vision may occur. When the eyes become infected, the treatment plan includes oral antibiotics and a strict eye cleansing routine. Steroid eye drops may also be prescribed.

There is no cure for this skin disorder but acne rosacea treatment includes topical antibiotics to reduce the skin inflammation and pimples. Other forms of acne rosacea treatment include oral antibiotics and long term topical therapy to keep outbreaks under control. Most doctors also realize acne rosacea treatment should also include assessment for depression since this disease is disfiguring and embarrassing to it’s? victims.

Aggressive acne rosacea treatment also includes the use of lasers to remove visible blood vessels and reduce redness. Surgery may be indicated in cases where the nose has become disfigured.

Once diagnosed with acne rosacea, it is important to follow an acne rosacea skin care routine. Mild, non abrasive cleansers are recommended. The acne rosacea patient should not use rough cloths or extremely hot or cold water on their faces. Lukewarm water and soft cotton towels are the best options for acne rosacea skin care. Constant use of sun block, (SPF 15 or higher) should be used daily. Make up can be part of an acne rosacea skin care routine, if it does not further irritate the skin.

Currently there is research being conducted on this skin disorder. As the population ages, an increase in acne rosacea is expected. While there is no cure today, research may develop a cure tomorrow.

Healthy Weight Loss

Filed under: Weight Loss — Health Information @ 3:02 pm

Healthy weight loss is a major topic of discussion and with good reason. During the past 20 years, the number of people classified as overweight or obese has more than tripled. These frightening statistics show how important it is that people are educated on healthy weight loss.

The media is full of advertisements for crash diets and meal substitutes. However, experts say that the key to healthy weight loss is eating the right foods and taking regular exercise. Moreover, many suggest that crash diets can actually lead to weight gain in the long run. Healthy weight loss is about lifestyle changes. This means making a permanent change to the way you eat and exercise. Many people find rigid diet plans difficult to stick to leading to a yo-yo effect on their weight ? constantly losing it and then putting it back on. Healthy weight loss needn’t be like this.

The main principles of healthy weight loss are:

Eat a balanced diet: Ensure your diet includes all the major food groups and concentrate on eating fewer foods high in fat, sugar and salt. You should also increase your uptake of fruit, vegetables and healthy grains. By filling your plate up with lots of vegetables, you’ll find you still feel full but lose weight!

Exercise, exercise, exercise! This doesn’t have to mean running or joining a gym. Walking for thirty minutes 3 times a week will help make you fitter and can lead to healthy weight loss. Find something you enjoy and you’ll be more likely to stick to it. Swimming, cycling, horse-riding, walking and keep-fit classes are some examples of great weight loss exercises.

Drink more water! Many people mistake thirst for hunger, and increasing your uptake of water can help prevent this. Water is great as it helps flush out the toxins in your body and keeps your skin hydrated. Drinking 8 glasses of water a day can help towards achieving healthy weight loss.

Changing the way you think about food. Many people eat for the wrong reasons, and this is why they gain weight. When you eat, think about your reasons, are you really hungry? Many people find they reach for ‘comfort foods? when they are stressed, tired or bored. By becoming more aware of these patterns you can help break the cycle, and instead of reaching for chocolate try going for a walk or something else to distract yourself.

Speak to a professional! If you feel you need to lose a large amount of weight or are unsure about the right plan for you, contact your doctor. Your weight is affected by more than just food, many health conditions can lead to a change in weight. Therefore, it is worth getting checked out and taking their advice on the best eating and exercise plan for you.

Be patient! Healthy weight loss is not achieved overnight and should be a gradual process. Stick with your new changes and you should notice a gradual but permanent change in the way you look and feel.

What To Do With A Tick Bite And Prevent The Diseases They Carry

Filed under: Skin Care — Health Information @ 2:13 pm

Ticks are a bunch of tiny arthropods and their main source of food is the blood of animals which includes humans. Ticks live in tall grasses, trees, leaf litter, shrubs and sometimes in your own backyard. Ticks cannot jump or fly onto their host’s body. Instead they burrow into the skin without detection and start drawing blood. Soft-bodied ticks usually have their fill after a few hours but their hard-bodied cousins may stay on the host’s skin for up to 2 weeks.

Although it is very rare to contract disease from ticks, they have been known to transmit the following disease to man:

  • Babesiosis
  • Rocky mountain spotted fever
  • Lyme disease
  • Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis (HGE)
  • Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis (HME)
  • Colorado tick fever
  • Relapsing fever
  • Q fever
  • Tick paralysis
  • Tularemia

The type of disease contracted depends on the location, type of tick, duration of the tick’s attachment to the host’s skin and season of the year.

How To Get Rid Of Ticks Yourself

  1. Sterilize the tick bite area with disinfectant.
  2. Put on a pair of PVC gloves if possible and use a pair of forceps or tweezers to clamp the tick close to the skin of it’s head. Be careful not to twist, yank or crush the tick.
  3. Pull the tick straight out and apply a constant amount of pressure until the tick cuts loose.
  4. Use a sterilized needle to extract the tick’s head or any other body part that was broken off in the skin.
  5. Apply some antibiotic ointment onto the bite wound and area around it.
  6. Wash your hands thoroughly with disinfectant soap like Dettol to kill any traces of germs on your hands and fingers.
  7. If possible, insert the removed tick into a container and bring it to a doctor for identification.

When You Should Consult A Doctor

  • You cannot remove the tick or part of the tick from the skin.
  • You develop a fever, rash, headache, muscle pains, joint pains or flu-like symptoms 2 to 14 days after the tick bite.
  • You develop widespread rashes 2 to 14 days after the tick bite.
  • You develop redness, pus, swelling or yellow drainage from the tick bite wound 1 to 2 days after the tick bite.
  • You develop a red-ring or a bull’s eye rash around the tick bite wound 3 to 30 days after the tick bite.
  • You have difficulty moving your legs.
  • You feel unwell and want to make sure your illness is unrelated to your tick bite.

Sole Elliptical - A Personal Experience Review

Filed under: Fitness — Health Information @ 2:07 pm

Working full-time while also caring for 4 children can be exhausting. For me, I am either sitting at the computer or chasing after my children. It is a fast paced lifestyle and one that does not lend itself to quality ‘me? time. I often struggle to keep my eyes open during the day and eating healthy, while important, has become a foreign concept. Until, that is, I made an important investment in my health and wellbeing. What did I do? I actually bought a Sole E55 Elliptical Machine.

I really wasn’t all that familiar with Elliptical machines. I knew all about treadmills. I have used treadmills in the past and remembered that I didn’t enjoy them at all. They were loud, cumbersome and I didn’t like the feeling of my feet slapping against the moving tread. It jarred my knees and, to be honest, I also had a bit of trouble keeping my balance while running.

I am one of those people that absolutely hate working out. I enjoy the feeling I get after I work out but getting motivated to work out is difficult. I need to distract myself while I work out. After I had my 4th baby I felt a need to get back into shape. I tried aerobic videos but didn’t enjoy them. I joined a gym but never had the time to get there. My husband suggested purchasing an Elliptical machine. We began to research which Elliptical machine would give us the most bang for our buck.

The Elliptical Machine we finally decided upon was the Sole E55 Elliptical Machine. It was delivered to our home a few days after we purchased it and I was so pleased.

I enjoy so many things about this machine but one of the biggest factors is it is so quiet. I have it set up in my office so that I am able to put my 20 minutes in and watch my favorite show at the same time. I don’t have to have the television volume turned to a deafening level just to be able to hear over the sound of the elliptical. Unlike a treadmill, the Elliptical machine is whisper quiet.

One of the other things I enjoy about it is that the foot pads you step on move with you. So as my foot raises up to take a step, the footpad raises up with me. There is no slapping your feet on a moving tread. There is no jarring of your knees. It is a fluid motion and since the arm bars move along with you while you are in the running/jogging motion, you are able to keep your balance and feel like you are getting a total body workout.

To change the set of muscles you are working out, you can switch from forward motion to backward motion as easily as if you were not on a machine at all and if you need to give your arms a rest during the workout there are stationary arm bars you can utilize as well. The stationary handle bars are equipped with built-in pulse sensors so you can keep track of your heart rate during your workout. It also comes with a heart rate chest strap so you don’t have to bother with switching from the moving arm bars to the stationary handle bars if you don’t want to.

My husband and I both use Sole Elliptical. He is a fire fighter so it is important for him to keep in great cardio shape. He is in a lot better shape than I am and so his workout settings are quite different from mine. The Sole Elliptical, however, has the option to save two different user settings so instead of having to set up your workout every time you step on the machine, with the Sole Elliptical all you have to do is press User1 or User2 and your settings are pulled up automatically.

After using the Sole E55 Elliptical I found that I have more energy and more patience than before I started working out. My stress level has decreased and my self-esteem has increased. Giving birth is a wonderful experience, however, afterward you no longer have the fact that there is another person living inside as an excuse for your large belly. I am finally starting to feel a little less ‘blimp-like? and a little more like the woman my husband married. I am no longer embarrassed to wear shorts and that ugly arm flab is finally disappearing.

For me, working out 20 minutes a day 3x a week is no longer inconvenient or a scheduling nightmare. I am able to work out in the comfort of my own home and at my own pace.

When it comes to an Elliptical, Sole is the way to go. After using a Sole Elliptical I will never go back to using a treadmill again.

If Weight Loss Was Easy - There Wouldn’t Be a Problem

Filed under: Weight Loss — Health Information @ 2:06 pm

Why isn’t your weight loss program working for you? I’m sure you’ve tried a few, and they offer quick fixes to problems that are really life long conditions. Many programs are only effective in the short-run, or not at all. If you lose a few pounds by going on a diet, you gain it back withing a few months. Why?

Weight loss is not something that is easy. If it were there wouldn’t be so much advertising, programs, and quick fixes surrounding it. It takes real work and dedication to make the pounds melt away. If all the pills, cures, creams, diets, and ads worked then we wouldn’t still have a problem! And oh what a problem we have. Over 50% of North Americans are unhappy with their weight. That’s a lot of unhappy people, and can you imagine where the real numbers are? The United States for sure!

Not everyone that wants to lose weight will do it. Not everyone can be a size 4 like the girls on tv and in magazines. For most people this is not a realistic figure. But you can be a healthy size 12 and feel good in your skin! You shouldn’t starve yourself for the perfect body; you will just bounce back. And you shouldn’t push yourself into doing extremely difficult exercises that you will become fed up with quickly. Balance is needed in order to stick with any program, and real knowledge of what the body needs.

Drink water! 70% of our bodies are made up of this vital liquid. 3 days without it and we would die. That should say something about how important it is. Drinking the recommended amount of water for your body (varies person to person) can curb hunger cravings effectively and make you feel healthier. With something already in your stomach you don’t need to eat as much as you normally would.

Stay away from greasy, fatty, and sugary foods. Go back to the naturals. Pick up an apple instead of a bag of chips or cookies. Eat veggies as a side dish instead of high-fat foods. You don’t have to completely revolutionize what you eat. You can start slow and keep adding healthy foods into your regular diet. Find healthy alternatives and recipes that you actually like! Don’t forget to treat yourself every now and then. Moderation is good and if having a cookie every now and then is something you’re interested in, you can still have it. Just don’t go overboard, and never eat simply because food is there.

Walk! Have a dog? Walk him around your neighborhood every day after work. Pick a farther parking spot so you have to walk farther to where you need to go. Walk fast and stay positive. You’re not going to drop the weight real fast, but you are going to help your metabolism to become faster so you can burn more calories.

Urticaria - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Filed under: Skin Care — Health Information @ 1:13 pm

Urticaria is an allergic skin rash also known as ‘nettle rash? or hives. There are two distinct types: acute urticaria is often caused by an allergy and can last between several hours and six weeks; chronic urticaria persists beyond six weeks. Most hives go away within days to a few weeks. Occasional unlucky individuals will have itches and swellings that come and go over many years. Urticaria is classified as either acute or chronic. Acute urticaria is defined as urticaria that has been present for less than 6 weeks. Chronic urticaria is defined as urticaria that has been continuously or intermittently present for at least 6 weeks. The 6-week period is a guide and not an absolute demarcation.Skin lesions and pruritus occur, caused by an allergic or nonallergic mechanism.

Urticaria occurs following release of histamine, bradykinin, kallikrein, and other vasoactive substances from mast cells and basophils, resulting in intradermal edema from capillary and venous vasodilation and occasionally from leukocyte infiltration. Urticaria has four major mechanisms. Most commonly, it is a manifestation of acute immunoglobulin E (IgE)’mediated hypersensitivity with histamine and other vasoactive peptides released from mast calls and basophils. Nonimmunologic urticaria occurs when an exogenous substance results in mast cell degranulation either by direct stimulation of the mast cell or by unknown mechanisms (reaction to intravenous contrast dye). Aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) cause urticaria by a non’mast cell mechanism, especially in asthmatics.

Causes of Urticaria

1.Allergens.

2.Environmental factors.

3.Drugs.(Penicillin).

4.Urticaria and alcohol.

5.Emotional factors( emotionalstresses).

Symptoms of Urticaria

1.Rash

2.Itchiness

3.Stress.

4.Swelling

Treatment of Urticaria

Oral antihistamines control wealing and itching for the majority of patients with urticaria. Avoid aspirin and codeine. It is usually safe to take paracetamol and the newer Cox-II inhibitor anti-inflammatories and avoid alcohol. Non-sedating antihistamines (loratidine, fexofenadine, terfenadine, cetirazine, and astemizole) are less likely to cause drowsiness than the less expensive conventional antihistamines. They may be unsuitable in pregnancy. Terfenadine and astemizole may increase the risk of abnormal heart rhythms. They should be avoided if you have heart disease or you are also taking erythromycin, ketoconazole and some other medications. Fexofenadine, loratidine, desloratidine and cetirazine are safe. Oral steroids (prednisone) are useful for severe acute urticaria but unsuitable long term because of serious adverse effects. Antifungal agents, used to clear an assumed underlying infection.

Will A Weight Loss Diet Pill Help?

Filed under: Weight Loss — Health Information @ 3:38 pm

We are all familiar with the ads; in fact, it would be difficult to go for an entire 24 hour period without seeing an ad for a weight loss diet pill. They come in a variety of shapes and colors, with some celebrity endorsements, complete with all the promises you want to hear. But, do they really help with weight loss? And, if they do, are they worth the potential side effects?

When comparing the many available types of oral weight loss support, it becomes immediately apparent that one of the main components is caffeine. Why? Caffeine helps to provide you with an extra source of energy that you may previously have obtained through snacking. While this may prove harmless and somewhat effective for some people, others might suffer increased anxiety, nervousness, and/or a feeling of irritability. The logic here is simple, if you may be caffeine sensitive and find that after using a supplemental pill for weight loss that you fall into the negative side effect category - pass on the pills!

Another common component of these oral supplements is their appetite suppression properties. Various combinations of natural, and not so natural, ingredients are used to reduce your desire to eat. Some people will find themselves with a sensitivity to these ingredients and experience a range of side effects. Cramping, headache, or nausea are very commonly experienced when taking a weight loss diet pill. If you’re taking these pills and your side effects are anything more than minor and temporary - stop using the pills!

When it comes to supplementing your diet with any type of weight loss pill, the smartest thing you should do before starting is to consult with your physician. Your physician will advise you as to whether or not you even need this type of supplement. Your answer to weight loss may be as simple as a change in your dietary habits, or getting a little more exercise. Also, your physician is more familiar with your overall health than anyone else, and will provide you with professional advice regarding any over-the-counter weight loss product that may help you with dropping some pounds, and more importantly; point out any product or product ingredient that could create problems for you. When it comes to safe and healthy weight loss, the advice of your primary care physician is priceless.

If this course of action is approved for you, the good news is that the safe use of oral weight loss products can help many people curb their appetites while providing a little extra energy to help your body adjust to the the changes in your eating habits. Report any sign of side effects to your physician, take the weight loss diet pills as directed, and you should be fine.

Why Do People Get Oily Skin

Filed under: Skin Care — Health Information @ 9:27 am

In an area just below the surface, there are natural sebaceous glands. These are small and many in number. These glands make an oily substance called sedum. This natural oil performs the function of keeping the surface smooth and supple. So how does this work’Well tiny pores allow the sedum to come to the surface. Hairs also grow through these small cavities, which is how nature intended it to be.

The real cause and why it occurs. The cause lies in the over capacity of the glands. These sebaceous glands secrete or make the oily substance leak out onto the surface. Here lies the real problem. People who are especially sensitive to normal blood levels of a hormone called testosterone. This is normally found in both sexes. These people are most likely to be susceptible to a breakout occurring. The sebaceous glands react to the testosterone, causing the excretion of the oily substances, which in turn leads to the breakout’s occurring or at least the person is much more prone to developing an attack of spots.

People prone to breakouts and sudden appearance of the dreaded colored domes may want to learn a little more about hormone and how it is created. The testosterone triggers those sebaceous glands to give out or produce to much sedum. To make the situation worse, the dead skin cells lining the openings of the hair follicles are not shed properly and lead to the clogging of hair follicles. The hair follicles are the tubes that hold the hair in the normal fashion. These both conspire to cause a build up of the oily substance in the hair follicle. The result is blockheads and the various other indicators common to an attack.

Some people may be lucky and not require acne treatment at all. the symptoms do not develop or progressing any further than this.

Unfortunate for some people,a build up of the oily substance in hair follicles,is an environment ideal for a certain bacterium. This bacterium is called Propionibacterium ances. The oily substances present, encourage it to grow. Typically the affected areas are the surface of the face, the back, sometimes neck, even the chest. Additional areas are the arms and depending on the natural make up of the person affected, the severity of the condition can vary. People of all colors and complexions can be affected. The processes that cause pimples are exactly the same in people with black or brown, dark, even yellow types. The impact is altered by pigmentation or coloring at the surface of the skin. This medical condition is quite natural and very common and affects about 8 in 10 people between the ages of 11-30 at some time.
